Who we Are

SpeedBeam started with the need to accurately measure tire slip angles. After years of chassis controls and motorsports work at Tesla, Tim believed there must be a better way to collect lateral velocity than the available options. Sadly, after trying everything on the market, it was clear that a breakthrough was needed. With a desire to make measuring lateral velocity as simple as plugging in a computer mouse, Tim left Tesla in 2023 to research and develop solutions. Along the way, he discovered laser self-mixing interferometry, that can measure speed in all 3 dimensions, and can even replace an entire suite of sensors with one single device! With this discovery, after years of hard work to adapt this technology from other industries to automotive applications, SpeedBeam was born.

I remember spending an entire summer researching my first car purchase. What began as apprehension evolved into a fascination with automotive intricacies, from engine compression ratios to subwoofer impedance. This passion led me to pursue a Mechanical Engineering degree in my small Alabama hometown, aspiring to “engineer cars.” A decade later, I found myself developing software for cutting-edge vehicles and testing them on racetracks worldwide. After eight years of trading sleep for two decades’ worth of experience, I was ready for the next challenge. Fortuitously, that opportunity had been in plain sight, promising to transform data collection with plug-and-play simplicity.
